Letter to James

James. A powerful name. It’s a classic. It’s traditional and biblical and Shakespeare loved it.
I love it too. It’s always been one of my favourite names since my dad and son both share it as their middle one. Names are fascinating and can tell us so much about a person. To call you by your rightful name is to call you who you are.

Since meeting you, James, I learned that the meaning behind your name stands true to your character. James means “He who supplants,” or takes the place of another. I see this as your super power in a few different ways.
You take it upon yourself to be planted in another's shoes. You have an uncanny knack for knowing where people are and how to meet them there. It’s a type of intuition. A reading between the lines to reveal truth. The truth in dialogue. The truth behind people’s hearts and minds.
Your name means to supersede or supervene. This kind of calling is not one to be taken lightly. It is a dangerous position when such power is abused and used against others. James, you are so perfectly seated for succession because, by the Power of God, you use your influence for good, and fight the evil invaders!
James, to me, means steadfast. A quality which draws people to your side. In a world so chaotic, your figure stands tall. I know what I’m getting with you. A smile, some encouragement and a feeling of joy that lingers even after you’ve left the room.
Although you claim introversion, your ability to personally touch so many lives, all over the world, is extroversion. Social confidence is your thing with never a lull in the conversation. There is not a person on Earth that wouldn’t benefit from a conversation with you.
It is no wonder your name also means to succeed. I continue to be in awe of your dedication and hard work toward specific goals. Your expectation of results. You state goals and repeat them (but not in a woah, awkward, kind of way!) so that when your intention is set and shared amongst others, there is no stopping it.
It is a rare strength to be singular in focus yet soar from 30,000 feet! I have been blessed to learn many things from you and I continue to cherish your advice on the major issues.
I am grateful to be a small part of your big life. To not only have the opportunity to work alongside you but become your friend. Thank you for choosing integrity; yet not at the expense of having a little fun!
Happy 65th Birthday, James. You’re a real brother to Jesus.
